Mp3: New release from Guillemots -"Kriss Kross"
"Let's shake things up a bit," sings Fyfe Dangerfield, and you know he's not kidding in this track from the Guillemots upcoming release "Red." A Bollywood-esque modal riff of hard-stabbing strings, horns and acoustic guitar dominates the song straight from the beginning. Then the fuzzed out bass comes in. Finally, the backbone is laid firm with the upbeat swinging drums... Or so we think until everything takes a left turn. The shifts from minor to major keys, while a little jarring, still flow and add tons of excitement on which to carry Fyfe's already exuberant singing... and then at the 1:50 mark, growling and yelling? Am I getting hints of 80's synth-metal here?
While songs from their previous album, "Through the Window Pane" such as "Trains to Brazil" were undeniably catchy, the rest of the album was a little to sticky sweet to for me to listen to. "Kriss Kross," while an unfortunate name, kinda makes sense here. Guillemots have done well here to introduce their new material with this being such a criss-cross reinvention of their sound. Not to mention the genre criss-crossing throughout the song. Aside from the snippet of "Get over it" on their Myspace, we will have to wait and see if they don't repeat the moves they made with their previous LP, and release a few good singles out of another sapid album.
Get the song by going to their myspace HERE.
