SSION's GOOEY BUTTER MIX DRINK-Y!!

It's a bit hard to take SSION seriously. From their outrageous attire to their, apparently, similar drinking methods. One thing we do take seriously is SSION's ability to get us fucking moving year after year. Here, SSION's Cody offers a bit of incite as to how they go about being so fucking good.

"SSION's GOOEY BUTTER MIX DRINK-Y!!

1 yellow cake mix
1 stick butter, melted
2 eggs
1 (8 oz.) pkg. cream cheese
2 eggs
1 (1 lb.) box powdered sugar

Grease and flour 9 x 13 inch pan. Mix cake mix, butter and 2 eggs well and spread as the bottom layer. Beat cream cheese, 2 eggs and powdered sugar well and spread on top. Bake at 350 degrees 20 to 25 minutes. let cool.

in x-LARGE mixer, pour in bottle of cheap rum, carton of egg nog and the gooey butter mix. mix on high speed until it's a big gooey mess. then drink all of it!"

Keep in mind... this is the man who can be quoted as saying, “Do you realize how many dumb indie rockers I could fuck if I just told them I did the art for that album?!” Regarding his animation for the Yeah Yeah Yeah's 'Fever To Tell'.

I first fell in love with SSION via SKYSCRAPER magazine back around 2003, then again on the Release the Bats compilation from Three One G. Though for a while there they stayed under the radar, they've recently become quite popular with their new, FOOLS GOLD record, and single for CLOWN which contains a remix by Portland's own GLASS CANDY. If you're hesitant to follow this recipe, you may want to beware of their records... but in either case you're missing out on something truly unique.

This shit is good.

GET REAL!

I've been subtly working on an article I will look to get published some time in the near future(next year or so) regarding downloading music. It will cover everything from record labels' thoughts, as well as artists thoughts on the matter. Hopefully I will be able to draw some conclusions about the social constructions it defies and the future of music as a profitable commodity. I've long since felt that there are only a handful of bands who can truly live without worry from their record sales alone, and there are things happening now that both validate and nullify my belief. Music has seemed to cave in on itself, and though this isn't a recent phenomenon by any means, it has caused an undeniable paradigm shift in the way we value art.

In an effort to get real about the subject I've been asking artists about how it makes them feel. Here's a few of their responses.

Castanetes: "[Downloading music] is a fat of life, like this shitty P.A."

Everybodyfields: "We'd appreciate it if people bought it, its pretty much gas money"
"It bastardizes our art"

Panther: more or less... "It's interesting the way people consider it their right"

I've got a lot to say about the matter, but in an effort to collect more opinions I ask you... what do you think about downloading music? Is it our right? Does it 'bastardize' the art, or is it something we should accept... like Sam Bonds' shitty P.A.?

P.S. no names or anything necessary, although if I know you... leaving your name might be good grounds for conversation next time we see each other.

p.p.s. My ID... might be done for.

17 Free Songs

"From the post-industrial wastelands of the Midwestern U.S. comes a gang of dues-paying producers and dj's. Jeekoos, Searchl1te, Cringer, and FSTZ have colluded on a project that will give voice to the sickness bubbling beneath the streets, howling through the empty trainyards, bouncing between crumbling bricks. Dubfront Records is a full-service sanctuary for outlaw beats. The cuts on www.DubfrontRecords.com are currently being rocked by your friendly neighborhood dj in clubs, at parties, and on the radio. The site will be updated frequently with new pieces available for preview and 320k mp3 download. It is our intention to meet like-minded folks from around the world through Dubfront Records. We plan to make digital and vinyl releases on the Dubfront imprint. Wherever you are, contact us if you'd like to share your bangers or get involved...

Dubfront Records
Puttin' it out cuz we got to. "

I love the way they acknowledge themselves as being "dues-paying". I talk a lot about not knowing where grime & dubstep is going, but I'm pretty sure Dubfront Records is taking steps in the right direction. For a while there it was cool to name drop dubstep star 'Burial', but after the uproar... isn't it kinda like buying a $36 ticket to Death Cab? Well... not quite, but it's certainly not fair to single him out when there are a number of producers just as committed: DubFront Records.

There's a high potential you may regret not hearing this.

I made...

A (really) short mix. These are my favorite tracks in the world at the moment.

KEVIN HUME: VELOCIPED

Following up your debut with a free single is a safe bet when trying to avoid the 'sophmore slump'. Who's going to get upset about free music, good or bad? Well, certainly not me, and certainly not if its this good.

(Side A) Kevin Hume - Night of the Velociped
(Side B) Kevin Hume - The Celestial Sleek-No Further

Both instrumentals offer the same mood, playing off their respective titles rather appropriately. While both evoke images of night time in the south, 'Night of the Velociped' offers a more abstract take on the subject, where 'Celestial Sleek' goes just about where you'd hope, calmly and serenely to sleep-No Further. Hume is doing something right, and I wouldn't mind listening over and over until I figure out just what that is.

vegan fettucini alfredo by, NO AGE

This should pretty much speak for itself. Amazing musicians, and apparently vegan chefs NO AGE have contributed this recipe exclusively for this blog!
Well, that isn't to say you can't share with all of your friends.

Without Further ado...

"vegan fettucini alfredo by, NO AGE

1 bag fettucini noodles
cannola or olive oil
1 block extra firm tofu
1 cup soy milk
1/2 cup earth balance margarine
1/2 cup nutritional yeast
spike to taste

boil the whole bag of noodles, ideally you would be making this for some friends as well, it is a lot of food and sharing food with people is fun. while boiling the noodles throw some oil in a pan. dice up the tofu in 1 inch squares, cook them really well until both sides start to brown. once tofu is done drain noodles and add to the pan with the tofu. add the soy milk, margarine and nutritional yeast. start to stir it all together. add spike, which is a wonder spice, i would add 4 or 5 good shakes to the top of it. stir really well, if you want it creamier add more soymilk. DONE! eat with a small salad and you are STOKED!"

I'll certainly be cooking this tonight, and if you find yourself doing the same take some pictures and show us how it went.

Tired of Using Technology

I've spent the past hour or so trying to extract the social implications within the lyrics of this song. When it comes down to it, I think it really is just about 50 cent having sex on kitchen counters. And although I was hoping for something deeper, I think I'm ok with that.

Ed Solo vs. 50 Cent & Timbaland - Sludge Technology

I'm coming to terms with the fact that I'm just talking to myself here.
I'll stop posting rap and dubstep for like a week now I promise.

T-Pain - Church (Bimbo Jones Radio Remix)

The original song is old, from his underrated debut, 'Epiphany'.

Anyhow, the 12" single just dropped for 'church' and this is by far the best remix. Although it has the word in the title... chances are you won't be hearing this on the radio. My guess is the singles going to flop, despite its inclusion in the Step Up 2 Soundtrack (also flopping). Am I allowed to say 'ahead of his time' twice in one day? T-pain is a genius.

SPEK23

http://www.myspace.com/spek23music

We don't know much about the dubstep scene over in the UK, except that it is producing some amazing artists. Cruising the dubstep forums I came across SPEK23. Right now SPEK23 is making my favorite kind of dubstep, taking obvious nods from the greats like pinch and even ethereal turns in the vein of Cotti's rare down-tempo tracks.

What grabbed me automatically about SPEK23 is this Dub remix of Bjork's 'All Is Full of Love'(which you can hear in his mix below).. appropriately titled, 'All Is Full Of Dub". SPEK23 does an excellent job of taking Bjork's softspoken original vocals and laying them over a pushed up tempo that completely respects the tracks all over feel.

SPEK23 is the kind of artist thats been grabbing Thom Yorke's attention for years, and in turn really made him so inaccessibly ahead of his time. He's making a strong case for the relevance of dubstep, and while it may not sound as clear as Burial, or the aforementioned Pinch and Cotti, (He'd be the first to admit) it shows the diversity in dubstep, and reminds us that it hasn't all been done before.

Spek23 Dubstep Mix 22.01.08

Here's some other stuff I've gleaned from the forums that I'm enjoying.
Tryptomatik - Finns 2-Step Overture
Mr. Neon - Layered Thoughts

And if you haven't already heard. TIME has had his newest effort 'Theatre Earth' dubbed(haha) mixmag's dubstep album of the month. Its for free download here.

AMAZING

The internet never ceases to amaze me. First I cop new albums left and right (new Janet Jackson- she too is using daft punk samples!) and then I find all of the Kissy Sell Out remixes. Rumored to be the son of Ron Wood of The Rolling Stones, his real name is Thomas Bisdee… some art student with mental remixes and erratic keyboard electro.

Go here to get all the remixes.
I was content to close my laptop and bike slightly boozy to bed but then I ran into a clip for the upcoming (2009 release) Spike Jonze movie, Where the Wild Things Are. Can you imagineall the high schoolers tripping to this in front of a giant screen?

Sorry about the double post... but WHAT THE FUCK?
Often 'Proud-of-Portland' YACHT has seemingly left for the Marfa and the millions.

WOW

no... not the kinda cool song by Kalle J.

I mean this stupid fucking video/idea.

What... you couldn't tell by the outfits and (nu)rave lights?
Its the klaxons. And I thought I was tired of the song itself...

EDIT!!
Due to copyright protection from the BRIT awards.... the video ACTUALLY was removed. Thanks to an attentive reader, we've rectified the situation by illegally upping a new video.

Double edit!
Don't you think we're overdoing the whole "mash-up" idea?

How to make...

Ahi tuna in Ponzu sauce. Hight class cooking with everyday ingredients.

Sushi grade Ahi tuna
Garlic (smashed)
Sticky rice (still warm)
Pinch of greens
Cornstarch mixed with water
Sesame seeds.

Ponzu sauce.
1 part lemon juice
2 parts soy sauce
1 part sugar
5 parts water
1 part sake

Heat the pan up, dry with no oil.
When pan is extremely hot, throw garlic into it and let it stick.

Pour in sauce right before the garlic burns.

Slice Ahi in half.

Dip Ahi in Sesame seeds.

Throw Ahi on grill. (Or A frying pan heated up)

Thicken sauce with cornstarch. Flip ahi.

Shape rice. Kill heat on sauce.

Slice lemon into wedges.

Slice ahi.

Lay slices across rice.

Pour sauce on sides.

And you are done.

Serve with a beer and a good soundtrack.

Kellan's picks. Part one.

There are about four people in Portland Oregon who are really, really into hard, noisy, banging electro. Kellan is one of them.
I first met him in the basement of a small house party. He was spinning Kompakt style minimal on vinyl which just screamed "I-should-talk-to-this-guy".
Since then I have seen him more and more around town, usually drinking vodka at the tube. And each time we geek out, high on the power of music, who remixed who, labels to follow and our favorite tracks to just really fucking lose it on the dance floor to.
Here is a selection of those tracks that he sent me recently. More to come.

The Second Coming

Sure, Chromatics have ditched their perfect peerless prior sound for this polished and petite italo sound, but for those of you who long for the days of Devin Welsh and Hannah Billie as the, was then, Chromatics... there is hope. Hope in the form of Hoarse Lords by Clipd Beaks. A glimmer of light at least, if not the whole bulb. I am absolutely salivating over the similarities here. True, Beaks kind of throw a bit more structure where Chromatics might have remained skeletal, but this doesn't make them at all bland. Still present are the bass lines that always hinted at the dance loving side of the chromatics, and here are even nicely complimented by haunted vocal samples where Chromatics might have opted out.

I guess if I've made anything clear here its that I love and sorely miss the 'Old Chromatics', but i write to inform you i've found solace in that loss thanks to Clipd Beaks. Here's to hoping the real album is as shitty quality as these early demo's.

Clipd Beaks - Wrathlords
Clipd Beaks - Hoarse Lords
Clipd Beaks - Manipulator

Hoarse Lords is out now on the seriously FANTASTIC Lovepump United.

Durrty Goodz

This video has been kickin' around for quite some time now, as has his Axiom EP -- for which this is a promotional video. I thought I'd share this though because both of these get a ridiculous amount of play around here. This is the man who got me into grime, and who better than "the pioneer of grime" himself? If you don't have his Axiom EP, pick it up RIGHT HERE. Or, preview a few of the tracks at his Myspace

The only problem with the eighties.

Was that the music was not mixed together into banging DJ sets. We all love the singles but after the twentieth time of doing the "safety dance" even the most ground breaking synth beats get old.
Enter DJ Gray.

An all around awesome guy and one of my oldest friends, I have seen him play miminal techno sets, hip hop sets and even entire dance parties based around tits and ass electro.
Now he does the eighties how it should have been done long ago.
Scroll down after jump.

Various Live Performances

Sloan Simpson has been to a lot of shows since last August. Most of which he has seemingly recorded in amazing quality under the 'Southern Shelter' moniker. On his blog one can find even FLAC quality files of recordings anywhere from a set by the crazed Daniel Johnston, to the Black Lips and most recently, Atlas Sound.

Atlas Sound are the first to admit they haven't fully worked out their live set, but given their upcoming show in Portland, I thought you all might like to get an idea of how it sounds. Plus, as part of Atlas Sound founder Bradford Cox's backing band is Portland's own Adam Forkner (White Rainbow, Yume Bitsu, Surface of Eceon and World) so there's a reason not only to listen now, but also when they play Holocene on 3/7 W/ Valet & White rainbow.

I wasn't going to post about this because everyone everywhere already has... but fuck it, my mom is even dancing to this shit.

of course she stopped dancing when she saw that cover and heard the words "pussy wet" repeated numerous times.

The best music video on BET

Whoever lived in my apartment before my roomate and I moved in must have forgotten to cancel their cable contract. And four months later they still have not corrected their error. We enjoy buying it in the only way we would ever pay for it; free. I hate television on a broad level. And on a very small level, well damn I like my well produced music videos at two in the morning.

Hip hop music videos are fucking great. Flashy neon color, a million dollar gloss, all the tremblings that this ispop culture in it's purest moniter. Songs that change beat three times, videos that completely change half way through and a paragraph of credits to seven guest rappers, this is high, abstract art.

And I fucking hate Lil Mama till ten minutes ago! Lip gloss? Who cares about lip gloss? I was so tired of that song. But this...but this...

I was saved by BET at two in the morning after the busiest day of the year at my resteraunt. Here was Lil Mama in a video of futuristic glowing white walls, spinnning hologram turntables with T-Pain! (Tomorrow I will write about why T-Pain is the smartest pop star in the world.)
I don't give a shit about lip gloss. But girls getting loose? Thats a whole different story.

Arcadia (Boys Noize Remix)

There must be some way to set music as an alarm... if there is, I wan't to wake up to the middle of this song everyday. Here Apparat's original 4 minute track is tripled, and rightfully so. Who isn't looking for an excuse to listen to apparat for another 12 minutes? Sascha's shamelessy sappy vocals set the mood in the original, but here we see Boys Noize push up the pulse and strip the vocals of all coherence. It's basically what you might expect from Boys Noize... but in a good way. Is there any other?

Roy G. Biv

FINALLY!
After leaving us hanging with one amazing/ one so so remix of Radiohead's In Rainbows, the day has finally come where money doesn't matter and the album becomes available free!

Here's my favorite so far, more of a cover than a remix but re-imagined in a very aggressive yet self aware manner.
Amplive - 15 Steps (Ft. Codany Holiday)

And that one is great... but really the whole thing is worth at least a little listen.

In the snippets-of-news world, Thom Yourke will be DJ'ing on NPR on Valentines day and my good friend and co-worker will be playing a show this Sunday at Rotture with his post-rock/ambient/shoegaze band Nanda Devi

There are exciting developments falling out of the sky like bird poop. Within the very near future we will be moving to the domain- fuckbadmusic.com- as well as launching stickers, t-shirts and little shiny buisness cards that we can hand out to everyone we meet

I would like to also throw a party around the time this all actually happens, to hug each other, drink a lot and get some good pictures of sweaty kids dancing the night away.

Later tonight look for photography and perhaps a step by step description of how to grill ahi and serve it over rice with ponzu sauce.

Days never spent at home.

My apartment misses me. My fridge was emptied a week ago. My shoulders hurt and my feet stink. But good conversations were had and a few memories made forever. At least until next weekend of for better-or-worse hedonism.
Hedonism spawns good music, insanely progressive dance music veering wildly through genres and countries like an eight year old on the internet.

My heaphones keep playing endless combinations of hyphy hiphop and electro, it seems like I hear Kid Sister acapellas mixed over hard beats three times a day. Dance floors must be on fire around the world. Despite my original intentions Steve Aoki's huge new "debut" album is on constant repeat in the kitchen. It's cheesy, it's easy and is surely going to be huge hit. Songs like The Boy Who Ran Away (Riton Re-Dub with The Mystery Jets) have mainstream crossover written all over them.

The news from around the world scares me more and more, amazement on a daily basis. Cultural trends and new lows in advertising. lThere is some new energy powder (The Red Bull of Emergen-C?) that just came out. I only imagine bro's pouring heaps of white powder into their Coors Lite while they survey the view of overweigh breasts grinding the Dixie. Our world really truely, is deskobsessed with getting fucked up. The kids with good reason and the adults with fascination.

Lack of Posts Boring You?

If you are (so backed up with new releases, like me) looking for the hottest new thing in Europe (Who isn't?) get on the Bassline bandwagon!

There is a substantial effort being put into the Bassline scene over there, most of which is documented via mixtape at Smugpolice. Go download whatever 12 mixes were posted today and tell us (or them) what you think.

Let me just put it this way... Shit is so dancey you can't even dance to it.

WHY don't we have english accents!?!

Clipse

Last year our most anticipated show of the season was The Clipse/Girl Talk booking during the NW music fest. The most intelligent writing with a backbone of gangster swagger. Word play, references to pop culture and of course the brittle Neptune produced pop beats.

The mixtapes have always been a bit more dubious, the same intelligence and um...malice but missing some of the radio friendly editing. None the less they are some of the most anticipated mixtapes around.
We got if for cheap mixtape #3

Fuck Buttons - Street Horrrsing

Though most of what can be heard on Street Horrrsing can be found on the singles and EPs that preceded it, they were never given such admirable context until now. Each track evokes a feeling whether ghastly or gay, leaving the listener undoubtedly longing for more. On their own, Street Horrsing’s tracks have garnered much praise, but upon listening to this cohesive effort it’s almost as if each was written precisely for this piece. Once the album begins it becomes a task to turn it off, rather than to commit.

As for each individual track, there is a common formula for most of the songs on Street Horrrsing. Like a wave we are brought from the preceding track into the next, which seemingly never becomes fully realized as its own until about 2 minutes in. When the layers of noise and distortion finally coalesce, we are presented with these ideas of dialogue that, although incoherently screamed, never suggest an aggressive nature. In fact, it is never clear if what we hear is actually voices, or simply an expansion of the sounds we’d been hearing through the course of the track. These sounds haunt each track, splashing around at either end. This is most undeniably true in the stand out second track, ‘Ribs Out’. Here we see Fuck Buttons at their most mellow, but not compromising any intensity. The song follows the formula considerably, but in a way unlike the others on Street Horrrsing. Rather than coalescing with walls of noise, ‘Ribs Out’ takes those presumed vocals and makes them the center piece of each moment in the track.

It isn’t until the rough transition between ‘Race You to My Bedroom/ Spirit Rise’ and ‘Bright Tomorrow’ that we truly become aware of the tracks as more than just functions of the aforementioned formula. Bright Tomorrow could in itself be considered a sort of comedown in that it isn’t expanded upon in the same way the opening track was from its original placement in the Sweet Love for Planet Earth EP. Although it ends on a different note, it doesn’t do a great deal to plunge the listener into the next track as those before it had. In fact, with ‘Bright Tomorrow’ the formula for which most of their songs consisted of becomes null, and remains that way through the following closer, ‘Colours Move’. But if ‘Bright Tomorrow’ is a comedown, 'Colours Move’ is hope for the same high. This becomes clear at about the 2 minute mark, from which we are given nuances of all that we had heard before.

Street Horrrsing is a strong debut, evoking reminisces of everything from Animal Collective to Tim Hecker. But where those two perfect their respective arts, Fuck Buttons serve as an ideal middleman perfecting the accessibility of the collective while composing as concise as Hecker, and in turn coming into their own. It’s unfortunate that most people will regard this album as simply noise, when there is clearly much more to it. Such is the mindset, though, that we too commonly accept as the standard. Thankfully, Fuck Buttons deny said norms presenting us with a cohesive, challenging and very credible debut.

Street Horrrsing due via ATP Recordings March 18th

Fuck Buttons play Doug Fir April, 21st with Caribou.
